Gov. Frank Keating vetoed a bill Monday that could have resulted in fines of up to $50,000 against candidates who lied about their opponents' voting record.
In his veto message, Keating said Senate Bill 352 "inappropriately limits the First Amendment right of freedom of speech." The bill "can be construed as not allowing for fair comment on a voting record and would likely have the effect of chilling constitutionally protected speech."
