i hate work. please, someone volunteer to be my sugardaddy.
have some interesting search referrals:

speaking of searches, to the right, i have added a search thingie. it's main purpose is for me, since it only searches my blog, and allows me to indulge in my self-linking fascination (see ninja entry, below), and because i often forget that i've blogged something and end up blogging it again a couple of days months later. i'm absent minded like that.
oh boy! something ninja-ey to keep me occupied.

i never realized how often i seem to mention ninjas and their skills..

this book was released two days ago and already the publisher has it listed as out-of-stock. i am displeased. i don't have a copy yet. i must have one. i think i know where to get one tonight.

however, i don't know if i should get one. funds are limited right now, so limited that it could be the difference between having food and not. the little Voice of Responsibility (hidden WAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY back in the back of me brain) says in a stern voice "Do NOT buy the book." there's the Voice of Gotta-Have-New-Toys (which is right up in the front part of the brain) says "It's just one book, and twenty bucks really isn't that much, and it certainly can't buy much food anyway." then there's the Voice of Changeling-Product-Consumer-Panic that screams "BUT IT'S A LIMITED PRINT RUN AND AFTER THIS THEY WON'T PRINT ANYMORE AND THE ONLY WAY TO GET IT WILL BE ON EBAY FOR ABOUT A HUNDRED BUCKS, SO YOU'RE ACTUALLY SAVING EIGHTY DOLLARS THAT YOU CAN SPEND ON FOOD AND THAT'S A RESPONSIBLE THING TO DO SO GO BUY THE BOOK." i have to listen to and satisfy all three voices if i want to feel good about my decision, so i throw them all in a big kettle, turn up the heat and simmer for a while to get my answer, which is.... child trafficking, narcotics smuggling and prostituition are excellent ways to get cash for food AND books.

anyone wanna put me in touch with some infertile European couples, drug cartels/DEA/CIA (same thing) or pimps?

eeg? Sandra Bullock as Wonder Woman? rumors of George Clooney as the lead in Batman: Year One disputed (thankfully. he's a little too old) and get ready for the funniest thing this side of Genosha: the Fantastic Four!

Bush said today's threats come from "a small number of missiles" in the hands of rogue states "for whom terror and blackmail are a way of life."

yup, rogue states like Nebraska and Delaware, surpassed only by Canada in criminaliness (heh, i like that word).

something to be proud of: we've just finished the fourth month of the year, and Oklahoma had it's 11th execution last night.

"I expected an apology" from Marilyn Plantz before she died, Cotton [sister of the victim and sister-in-law to the condemned] said. "We did not get it."

had Cotton been apologized to, would she have asked that Plantz be spared?
Buffy: they did it. they let Glory suck Tara's brain. not a happy moment. and poor Willow, running to get to Tara, catching glimpses of Gloria just as she starts the sucking, trying to cast a spell but stopped by all the visiters to the multicultural fair until it's too late. damn ethnicity! if everyone on television was white like they were back in the '50s, there wouldn't have been a multicultural fair slowing Willow down. she might have stopped Glory and saved Tara.

on the bright side though, it REALLY pissed Willow off. i've been waiting to see her cut loose on someone and do some magickal ass kicking. go go Willow! she was a little scary though, so i think i'll be nice to witches from now on.

what else happened? Giles gets tough on the hobbit leper (cool); Anya goes all patriotic (not cool), but mostly in a capitalistic way (sorta cool); Spike tells Dawn "stop it. you're not evil" (cool); Spike should look into getting something to cover those bruises (talk to Buffy. i'm sure she has some Maybelline he could use); Glory's a lush ("Mimosa. mmm. vitamins!" i don't think there's a vitamin -OH); got to see Glory doing some evil superpowerful breaking stuff (but i still don't think it was up to Hellgod snuff. i think she's got a lot more to dish out. she's holding back); Xander... was he even in this ep?

and, the episode ended with a major "oh shit!", one we knew was coming but still made me exclaim, as i said, 'oh shit!'. (see, there's a reason we lock insane people away, just so they don't accidently let the cat out to extra-dimensional beings).

Angel: this episode just made me feel sad for Cordelia. the visions, the after-effects of the visions, the goof balls she works with, and her pursuit of an acting career (i can't believe she just took that director's crap!). i felt sad for Wesley (damned fathers). i was a little sad for Gunn (because he let those half-wits give him a good dose of the Guilties. those guys he used to work with need to realize that he probably just doesn't want to work with a bunch of half-wits who, even though there are twenty-five of them, end up with a dead guy or two when they go up against a few vampires. seriously. how many vamps were in the theater at the end of "Disharmony"? around 100? and how many of the Angel Investigations crew died fighting them all? zero? Gunn's better off where he is.

anyway, lots of sadness in Angel last night, not quite off-set by the story with the Host (i love him! i just can't call him that name), and by the goofy-Angel antics (i kinda miss the brooding-Angel). and, at the end, we get a minor exclaimation, "oh crap," vocalized by me and Cordy at the same time.

Extra: here's a brief interview with Amber Benson, which reveals almost nothing about the final episodes of the season, but does talk about the movie she wrote, directed, produced, and even starred in with two other Buffyversers (a certain green-skinned lounge singer, and a currently-bruised blond British vampire).

i love you in that special Cordy-Angel way too.
"the Emmy nominee [Joss Whedon] maintains that this climax is as likely to leave the audience sobbing as it is to start them gasping."

oh boy! another Kleenex episode!

more Buffy links: Spike looks like he's auditioning to be Bruce Wayne's new sidekick; the Scoobies play ring-around-the-roseys with Dawn, Tara's looking a bit nervous, and Glory has a Calgon moment.
UPN pulls All Souls after the second episode aired. did the show suck that much?

today started well. i woke up often last night, like i used to do, but wasn't tired or groggy in the least this morning. i actually got out of bed wide awake the first time my first alarm went off (i have three alarms, staggered to sound in three minute intervals). i showered and dresssed at the same pace i always do, but was able to leave the house 10 minutes earlier than normal. traffic was light during the drive to work. i stopped by the supermarket, as usual, for bagels and milk. the bakery people had just taken the bagels from the oven, and they anticipated my arrival by having the rack within easy reach of the counter (usually, it's still in the back near the ovens, cooling), so there was no wait for the baker to retrieve the rack for me. at the check out counter, the cashier decided to have a buy-one-get-one-free on the bagels today, so i got a free bagel. at work, my boss was in a good mood and feeling insular today, so i've only had to see him once. all in all, today has been a good day, which only leads me to believe that something really, really, really bad is going to happen very soon.
writing the words "fall of Saigon" has left the song "Fall of Saigon" in my head, and so...

during my senior year of high school, i attended "Music On the Move," a showcase competition of some big-name (to those who know anything about it) DCI Drum and Bugle Corps. most of the performances were forgettable. in fact, other than the now-defunct host corp (whose name i cannot remember. sad, considering that they were based here), the only corp i remember being there was the Santa Clara Vanguard for their performance of selections from Miss Saigon. after hearing it on the field that day, i went out and bought the soundtrack that had inspired the SCV performance. it was my first Broadway soundtrack. turned out that one wasn't enough.

next came Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera, followed by Jelly's Last Jam, Falsettos, Guys and Dolls (not Guys As Dolls), and Into the Woods, and an assortment of others leading up to my current playlist of Passion, Aida, Rent and Man of La Mancha.

so, dad, you can stop blaming mom, my high school teachers, my high school friends, my college professors, my college friends, books, television, radio, movies, the Democrats, plush animals, Thanksgiving Day parades, PETA, my cat Patches, and the English with their hot tea. blame it on Santa Clara.
today marks the 26th anniversary of the fall (or liberation, depending on your point of view) of Saigon.

i was a day short of six months old at the time, so i, natch, don't remember it, and still know little about it. during my freshman year of college, i roomed with a guy who's family had fled Saigon in the days before the North Vietnamese Army entered the city. he was only a year old at the time and doesn't remember it either, but his parents do, and they've told him the story over and over. it was an extremely traumatic event for his parents, and they'd managed to implant in their son their intense reverence for the event that brought them to the United States, and their sorrow and regret at the same event that caused them to leave their home and family behind. my roommate didn't talk about it unless asked. even then, he said little, and his voice was tinged with sadness. it was astonishing to see the depth of emotion he felt for an event that he was too young to remember, that he knows only through the first-hand account of his parents. it was also astonishing to see the pride and patriotism he and his family felt towards this country, especially astonishing in contrast to my lack of patriotic tendencies.
The International Society of Cubists officially launched its Web site today, a brilliant rejection of natural form and perspective that metaphysically establishes the implication of movement, analytically redefines spatial relationships, and is an absolute bitch to navigate.

The site — digital graphics, text, and HTML on browser — has fared no better with art critics, who immediately accused the cubists of stealing the absurd navigation and layout from MSNBC.com.

i meant no offense to any Alabaman...or Alabamese?... 'baman?... uh... redneck1... who doesn't use phalanx computational methods.

darn2 Max to heck2 for taking away his permalinks.

1 i can say that. i live in a state with a high redneck population.
2 i don't want to be fined for profanity.
in Oklahoma, Sabbath-breaking is a crime, and so is profane swearing. profanity is punishable by a fine of $1.00. even wearing a hood or mask is illegal (unless you're going to a masquerade, are a kid on Halloween, or part of the circus).
I can count on my fingers and toes how many paid staff people there are in Alabama working on the environment," said Kristen Bryant, executive director of the Alabama Environmental Council

it's never good when a VP calls a suprise meeting with all the non-executive people, and it's even worse when he begins the meeting with "Some of you will be going home early today. for good." today is Downsizing Day 1. i'm going to hide under my desk until it's all over.
to commemorate Robert Downey Jr.'s monthly arrest, i thought i'd point out that Encore Avenue (Canadian) will be showing Less Than Zero next week.
quick Buffy review: good episode. good vampire and leper hobbit butt kicking. Spike gets his butt kicked. sweet ending. tantalizing teaser for next week. but why is Dawn pilfering earrings?

quick Angel review: such a sad start. One-handed Lindsey can't tie his ties or play his guitar. very sad. Cordelia sees something terrible and spends a couple of days crying. very sad. definitely not the madcap Evil Hand adventures i was expecting. Angel has grown a sense of humor, though he's not very good with it yet. Lindsey can sing. very well. but instead of pursuing a career touring the great demon karaoke bars of LA, he left town. adios.

also: what she said. (Spike did look good with his hair all mussed up).
you'd think this guy would learn to stay home.

7:00pm is approaching too slowly.

last night, a friend (who i rediscovered Saturday evening after he disappeared for 5 months) called. he'd received some worrying news and wanted to know if i'd stop by for a while to talk. i did so, and we talked over a case of MGD (blech!) until the wee hours of the morning. this morning, i was, again, two hours late for work.

being late usually isn't a problem because the rule in the office has been "as long as you're here between seven and nine, it's ok." that was the rule until this morning. the boss made some changes during my tardiness. i was given a "stern talkin' to" and even scored a follow-up reminder email about being late. from this, i have concluded that work sucks. in fact, i have decided that'll be the basis for my thesis, if-ever i actually get myself back at university.

the Supreme Court has ruled in Atwater v. Lago Vista that people may be arrested for minor traffic offenses.

O'Connor, writing for the minority, said Atwater's arrest was unreasonable under the Fourth Amendment. It does not make sense for the majority to say both that Atwater's arrest served no state purpose and also to say that it passed constitutional muster, O'Connor wrote.

"Because the court's position is inconsistent with the explicit guarantee of the Fourth Amendment, I dissent," she wrote.

i thought that oversleeping and coming to work two hours late would put me way behind for the day. turns out, i'm way ahead. i still have to stay late to make up the time i missed, but the boss has already left for the day, and soon everyone else will be gone too. then i'll be alone in the scary office. i hate that. there are too many freaky people in the building.

Spike!ha! i just downloaded some cool skins for The Sims. i now have Nightcrawler, Rogue and Mystique from "X-Men," and from Buffy i have Buffy, Willow, Angel, and Spike!
there must be something Simish in the air, because i too stayed up late last night playing The Sims. i passed up my usual assortment of World Conquest/Galactic Domination games (megalomania? me? nah!) for the thrills of micromanagement of a houseful of people all named for and based on my friends.

maybe i shouldn't tell anyone about that.
these things are gonna be so cool. i'm quite certain i'll be the first on my block to have any of these. the cards. not the diseases. it'll be fun to be standing out on the street corner with my friends, trading cards and shouting things like "Cool! i've got syphilis!" to which a friend replies "Yeah? Well, I've had tuberculosis and hantavirus for weeks, but Billy just gave me hepatitis B and C! Nyah!"

anyone wishing to contact me today, take me to dinner, introduce me to your cousin Pablo, show me the world, swear an oath of fealty to me, or grovel before me would do well to remember that i will be completely unavailable between 6pm and 8pm tonight (Central Daylight Time, of course). i will be re-watching "The Body", followed by the broadcast of "Forever." it's Buffy's mom's funeral, and i'm sure i'll end up being all weepy. anyone doubting my sincerity at remaining undisturbed will have to deal with the viscious attack kitty stationed outside my door. (yeah, she may not be able to do anything to you if you call, but she does know other ninja-cat assassins in other states. you are warned.)

if you are able to time your call/visit with a commercial break, i may make exceptions for the Pablo and Oath of Fealty things.

let's see... visits from the EPA, Dept of Energy, and Dept of the Interior. they're all connected somehow, and if i wasn't so tired right now, i'd form some sort of Conspiracy Theory about why those three are keeping tabs on me, and it'd probably involve the Girl Scouts. it's been a long while since i've accused them of any evil-doing.

on a less paranoid note, as of 9:29am this morning, the last of the great tolkhans has been visited 2500 times since december 21 last. i couldn't have done it without the unwitting and disappointed help of the "sexy saudi girls" and "Xena and Gabriel naked" searches.

isn't Boss Hogg just a bit too obsessed with that family, always trying to get the Duke Boys in his clutches?

i have several recurring dreams. last night was the Starsky and Hutch dream.

the S&H dream is, at it's most basic, just a pursuit. i'm a criminal of some type, and they're chasing me. usually, there's not a lot to it.

last night, though, i was a major multiple-felon, and also had the FBI after me. there was a spectacular chase scene through the streets of what looked to me to be a blend of Chicago and Dallas, with me on my skateboard, being very Tony Hawk. i managed to elude them by jumping over a wall and ending up in Claremore, the town i grew up in. the rest of the dream takes place there.

i met up with Agent Reyes, who hid me from Starsky and Hutch. i fled, and ended up in a neighborhood composed of TV Families. seriously. the Huxtables were there, the Harpers from "Mama's Family" too, and this strange amalgam-family of Dick Van Patton and Florence Henderson raising a bunch of kids (none of which were Bradys or Bradfords). even stanger, all the Golden Girls were there, only they were kicking ass like Charlie's Angels. they fought off the FBI, but then turned on me, fortunately, i had some Slayer skilz, and staked Rue McClanahan before the other three ran off.

there wasn't much more after that. it sounds like i've been watching to much TVLand or TNT or something, but i swear that i don't watch them at all, and i haven't seen Starsky and Hutch since it originally aired.
where'd he find that? now, my desktop wallpaper is a cap of his desktop. something wrong there.

today also happens to be his birthday. go wish him well.
i'm too obsessed.

reading the paper, i come across the headline "Keating spares life of slayer" (Keating is the governor of Oklahoma), and i think to myself, "spares, my ass. she can take him, hands down"

maybe it's time for terrence to turn off the tv for a while.
from the Tulsa World (since i can't link to it):

The [Oklahoma] House of Representatives passed a resolution Tuesday denouncing the book "American Terrorist: Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City Bombing."

House Concurrent Resolution 1021 says, "It is inappropriate to give recognition and publicity to a man who should be held in public contempt and disdain for his cowardice act of terrorism, and, no matter what justifications are advanced by the authors and publisher, give an admitted mass murderer another opportunity to be in the public spotlight."

The author of the measure, Rep. Jim Newport, R-Ponca City, said, "The idea is to simply not give any more attention to a mass murderer and a terrorist."

The Senate also passed the resolution Tuesday.

Sen. Grover Campbell, R-Owasso, asked, "Are you telling me we are going to deny public attention to this book by passing a resolution that is going to be printed in the House and Senate journals and reported by the media?"

"Unfortunately that's true," replied Sen. Mark Snyder, R-Edmond, the Senate author of the measure.

heh. god bless the simple little minds that are running this state.

Five Great Looks from this season's Buffyverse. i'm not so keen on the Buffster's earrings, but the Host and the diabolic duo of Darla and Dru definitely get my vote.

this comes from some spam i received this morning:
Researchers at the University of Kentucky found that women exposed to pictures of men that had been sprayed with [the pheromone] Androstenone found the men far more sexually attractive.

this Androstenone is powerful stuff, but definitely not for me. when i get home tonight, i'm gonna break out my Junior Chemist set and the EZ Bake oven and create my own line of anti-Androstenone, or maybe Homostenone. i think there's a lucrative market out there for it.

dark scary clouds swirled through the sky in multiple directions. big fat rain drops pelted me as i walked from my car to my office. the wind howled and clawed at people with umbrellas. executives in tasteless suits ran from their privileged parking spaces to the safety of the covered loading docks, slowing only to step daintily over puddles and rivulets.

i love when it rains.

car trouble last night has given me reason to take today to have the problem corrected. only now, my car's not doing anything that needs correcting. she thinks it's funny.

i've tried to describe the problem to mechanics, but they say, uniformly, that unless they can see the symptoms themselves, they cannot diagnose the problem. my car is not cooperating with me. she's trying to make a fool of me.

it's some sort of power game. she wants me to know that i'm at her mercy, and that it's actually she who owns me. she hates me.

that's what i get for giving her the name of a demon.

Anguirus, in a fit of rage, promptly trampled Jeff Probst and proceeded to devour him. "Hula Hoop this, you sonovabitch!" screamed the spiked dinosaur as he stuffed the hapless Probst in his gaping maw.

i'm liking the Monster Island version much better than Australia. when was the last time a contestant tried to eat the host on the CBS show (speaking of which, there's a nice little tie-in for that. read some Survivor Haiku for more)?

"For seven and a half years I've worked alongside President Reagan. We've had triumphs. Made some mistakes. We've had some sex...uh...setbacks." —George Bush Sr., in 1988

i didn't pay much attention to politics in 1988, since i was all of 13, but now i wish i had. compare Bush I to Bush II.
don't f*ck with the clown.

a marketing assistant claimed that she was fired by McDonald's for her campaign to rid the world of the Hamburglar. the fun points of the story:
  • the woman was hired after a newspaper story described her standing in front of a mall with a sign reading "Mother Will Work For Wages." apparently, i've filled my résumé with a bunch of unimportant educational history and employment experience. from this day forward, it will simply say "Will Work For Wages" (like any good prostitute), or, if i'm seeking a white collar position, "Will Work For Salary Plus Benifits," or if i choose to be a politician, "Will Work For Graft."
  • of all the ills in the world, she chooses to start a crusade against Hamburglar? that'd be a little low on my list of priorities (if i were inclined to actually do something about the world's ills, which i'm not).
  • "I figured what better way for McDonald's to show the community that they care." ah. so Ronald McDonald House Charities aren't as worthwhile?

had i been her supervisor, i probably would have fired her too for not notifying me that she wouldn't be at work, depending on her job performance. seriously, how good could someone be when they were hired from the standing-in-front-of-a-mall-with-a-sign employee pool?

yeah, it's a six year old story, but it got me laughing.
now i know what Faith is.

i bought The Slayer Chronicles last night, and had myself a little watchparty (with only me and Technicolor Bear, but all he did was lie around staring). Angel's visit to Faith in prison makes sense now (though i don't know *why* she's in prison), and seeing ultra-shallow Cordelia was fun (though i so much like her hair better now). and Anya! she showed up briefly! i had to hop up and down in my chair when i saw her.

Graduation Day was one of the best episodes! who needs Crouching Tiger when you have fight scenes like Buffy and Faith's?

there is nothing to do here at work. hasn't been a single report sent down in almost three hours. now, there's no one left upstairs to send reports down, so there will be no more today. but i can't go home. i have to stay here. i've run out of interesting blogs to read, and i'm bored. please, someone send me email. brighten the day of a lonely cubicle dweller.
pssssst! hey you.....email me!
it's that time of year again, for sugar overdose madness. personally, i don't like to eat 'em, but they sure are cute.
a profile of Bruce Campbell. and here's the ten most misleading B horror film titles. everything you need to know is at The Astounding B Monster.
The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films has announced its nominations for the 27th annual Saturn Awards.

Freddy Krueger is getting a Life Career Award, and it appears to have been a slow year for the science fiction/fantasy/horror/action/adventure/thriller genres, judging by some of the crap that was nominated. they left out a catagory: Film I'm Least Likely to See. my nominee, for the 5th year running, is anything with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
it's an old one, but indulge me:

"New York mayor Rudy Guiliani is again expressing outrage at an art exhibit, this time at a painting in which Jesus is depicted as a naked woman. Said the mayor, 'This trash is not the sort of thing I want to look at when I go to a museum with my mistress.' "

i love Tina Fey. not quite as much as Jimmy Fallon, but dern-near close.

As for the White House, a spokesman said, "The president has taken any number of bold steps to safeguard our environment.

this reminds me of the Simpsons episode "Guess Who's Coming to Criticize Dinner".

the Springfield Shopper claims that it's newspaper is printed on a certain percentage of recycled paper.

"What percentage?"

"Zero. Zero's a percent."
We'd like to have Baptist ministers and Catholic priests buying and selling drugs... —North American Interdenominational Conference

not really. it'd be a heck of a way to get church and mass attendance up though. that's actually a quote from a NYTimes article about questionable drug task force arrests in Texas.
please, God, i'd rather have Crowe be Bond.

HispanicOnline recently talked with Antonio Banderas about how the film version of Andrew Lloyd Weber's play [Phantom of the Opera] was progressing to which he replied: "I think we're going to do it.
