this cannot be happening.

The rumblings have been around for a few days but it hit the press today over at MSNBC who have been in contact with a source claiming they've been trying to get Russell Crowe for the role of James Bond once Brosnan leaves the franchise.

it's a rumor. please let it stay that way. i love the Bond films, but i'd have to boycott them if Crowe was Bond, out of respect for Dennis.

Crowe joins an ever increasing list of candidates for the role when Brosnan goes including the likes of fellow Aussie Hugh Jackman.

that's better.

my keyword misdirection ploy worked too well, methinks. the leading referrer to my site for each of the last 5 days has been a Yahoo search for "s_xy S__di g_rls", although "melonenfick" is making a strong showing too now.
um, am i still hallucinating, or is there something wrong with the quote today?
not alot going on in the world, i see. today's a slow news day. instead of linking to fascinating factoids of national and international importance, i'll just tell you what's going on with me, which is, in it's own way, of international importance. stroke my ego and agree with me.

i didn't know that today is National If Your Job's Not Fun, Don't Go To Work Day until after i got to work. now i'm stuck here. i don't think anyone in the office realized what day it is, because we're all here. holidays such as this should be better marketed and publicized. Hallmark really dropped the ball on this. i'll bet their IYJNFDGTW Day card sales suck.

finally saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon last night. no one told me it was a sad movie. i cried all the way home. not really. but it did make me wish i had a sworrd, and that i was a Chinese girl so i could bounce around the tree tops and run on the walls. Chinese people are cool, and you know they can *all* do stuff like that. they're just too modest to show it.

Jean and i finally exchanged Christmas gifts. she got me the The Hobbit pop-up book. it makes me so happy to have someone who always knows the perfect gift for me. i had to hop around when i saw it.

i think i hopped, anyway. i may have imagined that part. yesterday was an interesting experience in pharmacological side effects. i spent a good portion of the day hallucinating after taking that Flexeril. some of the more interesting things i saw include lines on a page transposing themselves, an orange tabby cat sitting in my cubicle, and my computer moniter blinking at me. so no more prescription drugs for me. i'll just stick to large amounts of liquor when i can't sleep.

and speaking of liquor... ok, i don't have any liquor tales to tell, but if i had, i also had a good segue to go along with it

and finally, my last experience of yesterday evening was going to a Chinese take out place after the movie, ordering some chicken item with the name of Chinese province. i take my order home, open it, and find broccoli beef. i've only ordered from that place once before, and the same thing happened then, too. i didn't realize that broccoli beef was also known by so many names containing the word "chicken".

yippee! just got confirmation. Jean and i are on for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon tonight. finally, someone's going to go see it with me.
ever other day or so, i get a couple of emails here at work that read "There is another 'I Love You' virus e-mail going around. If you get it don't open it, delete immediately!"

i'm becoming quite annoyed by it. whomever it is that keeps opening the attachment and re-circulating the virus shoud be killed denied use of the company's email system so i don't have to get that stupid message every second day.
i don't understand all the hullabaloo over background checks to purchase firearms (especially in the cases noted in the article). the buyer had to wait 20 minutes for the background check to go through.

[The man with the mustache] said he had been attending gun shows for 55 years, "and I've never seen an illegal transaction."

um... how would he know? it's not like criminals wear Hamburglarish striped uniforms.
and since i'm on the subject of the X-Men movie, are we gonna see Ms. Marvel soon? Rogue has to absorb Ms. Marvel's powers so she can fly.

but even more importantly, are we gonna see Dazzler? no...wait... they'd end up casting Britney Spears as Dazzler. i'd rather not see that.
a reportfrom Sci Fi Wire on X-Men 2 has Bryan Singer saying "I can't give you any hints as to whether the Sentinels and Dark Phoenix will turn up." that's the first time i've heard mention of Dark Phoenix in reference to the cinema X-Men, and i think any fan of the paper X-Men would agree with me that seeing the Dark Phoenix Saga on screen would kick ass, take names, publish them in the NY Times and refuse to issue a retraction. well, seeing it as it should be, anyway (God and Stan Lee willing).
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: the animated series? looks like i won't be sleeping in on Saturdays for much longer.
i was looking up some information on cyclobenzaprine (the generic name for Flexeril), taking a look at some of the side effects. the website cracks me up (not hard to do, i guess).

throughout the page, various terms are linked so that, when you click on them, you get a little javascript pop-up that defines the term. some of the words that are linked for quick 'n' easy definition are human, breast, mouse, age, male and animal, while terms such as vacuolation, tachycardia, hyperpyretic and myocardial infarction are not.

if the site is mainly for use by the average Joe or Jane on the street, you'd think the medical terms would be defined. if the site is meant to be a reference for medical professionals, would you really want to use the physicians or pharmacists who don't know what a mouse or a male is?

Not the face!

John Doggett rose a notch in my estimation last night, then quickly fell back.

scene: Krycek jumps into his car and takes off. Doggett runs after him. i'm thinking yeah! go T1000 on his ass! he catches the car, reaches through the window and punches Krycek! i shouted "No! Not in the face!"

Doggett, of course, doesn't listen to me, and continues to beat him.

bad Doggett! bad! he needs to be bonked on the head with a rolled up newspaper.

egad. i just noticed that my archives aren't publishing.

and no, that's not an April Fool's joke. if it was, it'd be even lamer than my two oranges joke (yes, this is an attempt to get everyone to reconsider a joke that never fails to make me laugh).

a tentative hoorah!
[NYTimes. reg. req.]
so let's recap this week's events on Survivor. not that Survivor. this Survivor.

so long to Mechagodzilla After losing the Karaoke Immunity Challenge, Mechagodzilla was booted in the nearly unanimous decision of his Islandmates. the key to his downfall was probably his failure to establish a Lizard Alliance with the other reptilian contestants (some may point to the fact that Mechagodzilla isn't technically a reptile, but rather a mechanized simulacrum of a reptile as the largest obstacle to the Lizard Alliance).

for more details on this week's events, visit the Survivor: Monster Island website.
today, i get to spend the day opening envelopes and sorting faxes.

i think i'm a little overqualified for my current position.

here's a little bio for Northstar, Marvel Comics' first openly gay superhero. for one issue. of the original Alpha Flight series. which means he's Canadian. from what i can tell, he didn't make it into the new Alpha Flight, which began publishing last summer, but i did stumble across some news that he joined/will join the X-Men briefly this month (and because today's the 29th, it's probably already happened) to help fight Magneto because most of the other X-Men are off doing something else. lazy bums.
this brings back too many terrible memories of abused adolescence and innocence ripped away. sometimes, though, you have to stand up and say, "I am no longer a victim. I am a survivor."
i heard on the radio this morning that VH1 viewers chose the greatest dance song of all time. their choice: Living La Vida Loca.

bleh. i used to think those people had taste.
i'm at the top of the list on a Yahoo search for gengar + malaria. i'm also the only result on the list. who'da thunk?

an Elseworldsesque thing with a Stalinist Superman is the type of thing that, though the idea catches my interest, i wouldn't make an effort to find and read. until i read that Pat Buchanan is disgusted by it. now i must read it.

send a photocopy of your ass to Sylvester Stallone's mom (along with a check for $100) and she'll tell your fortune.
[fortuitous assprints stolen from memepool]
there's something about using an actual sports term in conversation that leaves a terrible taste in my mouth.
this Survivor is much more interesting than the one currently showing. i'd watch any show that bills itself as a "Machiavellian game of wits and atomic breath."
eww. children are nasty little buggers anyway, so why would you want to suck their feet?

"I think their plan is to do Aliens Vs. Predator. And I'd just assume not be in that, although I'm sure I could whoop them both." Jimmy!

Sigourney Weaver, when asked about a possible fifth 'Alien' movie.

a corollary: who'd win in a fight: Ripley or Rocky?

and would my use of the word corollary be an example of catachresis? (i love a man with an extensive vocabulary. if i didn't already have a crush on Jimmy Bond (at right), i'd be crushing on Dean right now)
egad! one of my co-workers stole the lamp off of my desk! and he has the globes to use it at his desk like i wouldn't notice! bastard must die!
bah! the DSL was down at home last night. sucked.

there's a particular restaurant i dined at often whenever visiting the St Louis area. the last time i ate there with my best mate Brian, he took a bite of his meal and immediately spat it out. the meat was rancid. we stopped going there.

i found out this weekend that the place has been closed down for serving puddy tat. it's not enough that i have to worry about Daft Cow Disease, but also that the subjects of "$50 Reward If Found" posters may have become several of my $6.95 dinner entres.
yes! one less clown!

the animated banner was beginning to irritate me. there are some other little things that are irritating me too, but they'll have to wait until get back Monday. they guys i'm staying with in MO have a dial up connection that's really frustrating to use.
Jean and i were discussing our meager knowledge of jokes and how lame those jokes were. she shared her jokes with the world and has mentioned twice that my one joke, which has been cracking me up for over ten years, is much lamer than any of hers, and that it's even lamer than (dead link) Pete's joke. now, for your edification, i will tell the one joke that i know:
two oranges are sitting in a bathtub. one orange turns to the other and say "Pass me the soap."

the second orange turns to the first and replies, "What do I look like, a typewriter?" *ba duh DUM!*

eh, who asked you anyway.
GOP leaders repeat, almost as a mantra, that the estate tax, which they call the "death tax," should be repealed because it is immoral to tax a person after death. The Democrats have failed to raise even the obvious corollary: What makes it moral to tax the wages of a living person, but not the wealth left by someone who is dead? —David Johnston, in the New York Times.

i'm hoping that 2001 will be the year that i move up the scale into the upper lower class. then, i'll be king of the barrio/retirement mecca that is my neighborhood.

i want to help with the adoption of three whole kudu, but i don't drink coffee. i guess i could keep pencils in it.

it's too late. i probably already have it. what's the point of giving up beef now?

the Supreme Court has some redeeming decisions.
arrangements have been made. i'm going to St. Louis this weekend. it'll be nice to get away from my talks-non-stop roommate for a couple of days. the best part, of course, is that i'll get to eat Whitecastles again before i give up beef completely (it's that whole Mad Cow Hoof disease thing).
i overslept this morning. i was two hours late for work, which really sucks because now i have to make it up at the end of the day, and it gets scary in here when everyone else has left.

another Mad Cow disease article: "remote farm in Greensboro was surrounded by police cars and men wearing bulletproof vests to round up his herd."

not only are school kids packing heat, but now, apparently, farm animals are also.
my past life diagnosis [my comments in brackets]:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know how you feel about it, but you were male in your last earthly incarnation. [phew! female parts are so icky! (no offense given to any females out there)]
You were born somewhere in the territory of modern Quebec around the year 1075. [good lord have mercy on me. i was Canadian?.]
Your profession was that of a shepherd, horseman or forester. [i'm quite certain, if i was born in Quebec in 1075, that i wasn't a horseman. there were no horses.]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your brief psychological profile in your past life:
Person with huge energy, good in planning and supervising. If you were just garbage-man, you were chief garbage-man. [chief garbage man! wow!]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The lesson that your last past life brought to your present incarnation:
You are bound to solve problems of pollution of environment, recycling, misuse of raw materials, elimination of radioactivity by all means including psychological methods. [environmentalism *is* one of my biggest concerns. this thing is so accurate, it's uncanny! it'd be completely right, if not for the fact that i can barely motivate myself to breathe, to say nothing of taking on any Causes.]
everyone should go check out The Mimsies and download some of their mp3s. i'm only doing this because, if they become really famous, i can go on Hard Copy and spill some dirt on the lead singer (provided there's some sort of recompense).
"The action was the second victory in a week for the mining industry, which was a big contributor to President Bush and the Republican party and which had sued to block the Clinton rules. Last week, coal producers embraced the administration's decision not to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from power plants."

time to go back to vegetarianism. i don't want to end up with holes in my brain.

it cracks me up that there's an "Official" Mad Cow Disease website, though i think it's purpose is to scare rather than inform. most of the BSE sites i found were like that.

on an (un)related note, if you enjoy this type of thing, make the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report part of your regular reading.
i guess he doesn't get out to the movies very often. otherwise, he'd be used to it.

having publishing problems. have to do this a more difficult way.
a radio station in New Zealand has had to apologise to parents after handing out plastic bags of icing sugar as part of a contest at a screening of drug drama "Traffic" with kids in attendance.

heh.
in Montana vs. Egelhoff, "Justice Antonin Scalia... declared that defendants do not have an absolute constitutional right to present all relevant evidence in their defense."

i think there's something wrong with being unable to present evidence that you were physically incapable of committing a double homicide.
"Moscow opposes the [national missile defense system] scheme and any revision of the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM), saying the missile shield would undermine its own deterrent and trigger a new arms race."

i think that's the idea.

is anyone going to go see the Josie and the Pussycats movie? care to tell me why?

Monday, March 19, 2001

i think that having more space on the screen for my posts has only encouraged me to write longer posts. longer posts lead to many more grammatic mistakes.
i think i'm firmly on the side of the Brown University protesters who stole the campus paper. if they can silence all opposition, maybe the Federal government will agree to pay reparations for slavery. then, maybe i'll be able to claim some of that money, since Native Americans were enslaved also.

greed aside, whether i agree with them on the issue of reparations is irrelevant. i have a problem with people who feel justified in silencing someone because they disagree with the person's viewpoint, or in the name of "sensitivity" or "tastefulness." i think it much more distasteful to censor opposing viewpoints and deny or handicap another's ability to think for themself and form their own opinion. i used to think of university as a place where people fought for free press and the expression of unpopular ideas, but i read article after article that make it seem that the students now only fight for the expression of like-minded ideas.

sensitivity and tastefulness have their place, but i don't think they belong in a reputable newspaper. newspapers (and other newsmedia) are supposed to be there for the dissemination of factual information, not to make sure that everyone feels good about what they read. if you don't like the information (or the advertisement, as in the case above), don't throw your outrage against the newpaper. go after the motherfucker who offended you. write a rebuttal and have it published or debate him. don't shout him down or silence him. i'm more likely to listen to a calm and rational discussion than to a mob of screaming protesters.

i'd like to reiterate again that this post has nothing to do with the issue of reparations for slavery outside of linking to an article. it's about what is supposed to be one of the most fundamental rights to a free and informed self-governing society. it's bad enough that there are people out there who are more than happy to spoon-feed opinions and political views to us. there's no need to us to swallow it unthinkingly, reguardless of whether it comes from a like-minded individual.
maybe i should start reading Native American newspapers again. i didn't know anything about this until it was too late to attend.
the Supreme Court should have taken this one. they could have required samples, getting a free lunch in the process.

they probably already get free lunches though.
letting kids convince lawmakers of the virtue of a particular piece of legislation and lawmakers using kids to convince voters. i realize the article has nothing to do with that (it's about banning elephants from circuses), but it irritates me to see politicians and lobbyists gaining sympathy for or against a bill by exploiting the oh-so-cute-yet-naively-profound-pseudo-wise (blech) perspectives of children instead of debating its actual merits (or lack of), or its inherent rightness (or lack of).

it irritates me that people actually fall for that crap. who cares if a particular law is necessary or just. slap the photo of a puppy-eyed second grade kid on it, and suddenly it's the right thing to do.

why listen to these kids? they're friggin' blowing each other away at school. how can you trust them to know what's compassionate and right anyway? you can't.

how many times have you heard or read some Senator's speech, and somewhere within it, they mention that their position was influenced (if not actually decided) by "looking at my daughters as they slept" or "hearing my sons wonder why"? why don't these same Senators ever tell you about the decisions they made while "watching my son empty a clip into that Johnson kid in homeroom," or "listening to my kids talk about how they nailed a cat to some plywood and tossed it into the lake"? you never hear that kind of thing.
according to last week's TVGuide, Bernadette Peters is going to be on Ally McBeal tonight. i may have to watch.
definitely crushing on Jimmy Bond.

Sunday, March 18, 2001

i caught the last few minutes of "Malcolm In the Middle" tonight. i don't normally watch it, but i've decided that it can't be a bad show. tonight, it ended with the family beating up a gang of rogue clowns (as we all know, all clowns are rogues, and they travel in gangs. the better to do their evil-doings). i hate clowns. i love seeing people beat the snot out of them.

blogger won't publish, dammit.
i just watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer , the one with the Hooter Girl Buffy. it's been several years since i've seen it. very funny. it doesn't quite fit with the Maybeline Buffy, but it's still good fun, and it's the only time i thought Luke Perry was attractive. it made me miss Willow, Tara and the other Scoobies. it also made me wonder, why doesn't Spike fly?
i can't find a pic of him to post, but i think i have a crush on Stephen Snedden. mucho grrr! and i kinda like 'em big 'n' dumb (ok, Jimmy Bond is big and dumb. i don't know about the actor. if he's dumb, i mean. i know he's big).
no Gambit in X-Men 2? Beast and the Sentinels to appear? a Wolverine solo project? get some X-Men rumors here.
"Far too many youngsters are desensitised to violence."

so the answer, of course, is to desensitize them to corpses as well.

personally, i'd love to get to watch an autopsy. i'm not psychotic or on the verge of killing my co-workers. i just want to be like Dana Scully.
talking about He-Man yesterday has me wondering: remember how He-Man pointed his sword at Cringer and it shot energy out and transformed Cringer to Battlecat? could He-Man do that with any animal? could he, some day when Cringer's out of town, point his sword at the family dog and get Battledog? or was the sword specifically attuned to the Cringle/Battlecat transformation?

using mathematics to prove that you can't prove much of anything with mathematics has the faintest hint of irony,.

additionally (heh), it seems a bit pretentious of this guy to name his uncalculable number "Omega" as if it was the end all of mathematics. besides, i have a problem with anyone giving a name to a number that doesn't actually exist.

Steve's talking about his Legos made me remember my exstensive Lego collection from my senior year of highs school. i was into the pirate Lego system, and had the whole humongous Pirate Island thing going on, occasionally being attacked by some Lego Tie fighters i'd built. the pirates didn't stand a chance against the Dark Side of The Force.

i left my Legos behind when i went to college. when i returned for Christmas, my Legos were gone. in my absence, my uncle had lain claim to them and transported the entire Pirate Island to his house, only it wasn't Pirate Island anymore. it had become a guitar and the Sphinx. the pirates themselves had become an assortment of body parts in a glass jar. i haven't bought any Legos since.
dammit. bossman has decided to give me more responsibility, cutting into my afternoon goof-off time. not good.
now's my chance to get the Skeletor figure my father wouldn't let me buy when i was a kid. he made me buy He-Man and Man-At-Arms because they weren't evil, and because they were "Real Men"™.

some day, i'd like to tell him that those "Real Men"™ were actually muscle queens, and that's the reason i'm gay.
last week, i blogged about a murder that happened down the street from where i live. i read an update on it today, the first time i'd read the victim's name. Jeanie did some quick checking, and now i'm certain that the victim was a kid i used to tutor during my junior and senior years of high school.

tolkhan 2.0 is now up. the text is now brighter to make it easier to read, some of the clutter has been eliminated, i have a nifty new banner that has a rather hypnotic pulsing to it, and i finally put up a new quotation.

Obviously frustrated with the tepid support so far from religious leaders, [Oklahoma Representative J.C.] Watts said, “I do believe we would have circumvented a lot of problems we’ve experienced over the last 35, 40 years, had the faith community not abdicated their responsibility and if they would have been involved the way their faith dictated that they should have been involved, i.e. racial issues.

he's right. the "faith community" had no positive contribution to the Civil Rights movement. here are some interesting tidbits on this football-star-turned-Baptist-minister-turned-politician.

zounds! i didn't mean to start anything with that last post. i thought Jonno's post was funny.
i'm only blogging this NY Times article on television and teens because it mentions Buffy a few times, and because i think i know some people who'll dispute Jonno's contention that only 12 to 17 year-old-girls and gay men watch regularly.

my goal in life is to become a billionaire philanthropist by the time i'm thirty.

unfortunately, at the age of 26, i am nowhere close to being either wealthy or philanthropic. i'm not too worried about the latter; the former i blame on The System*, and on the millions of people who still resist forming a cult around me and tithing generously.

anti-procrastination efforts are coming along well. i'm shaven (yippee! i don't look like i'm 26 anymore!), i half cleaned as i said i would (dustbunnies are gone. chrome isn't shiny yet), and i read 150 pages of my book last night (it may be light fare compared to what others read, but the important thing is that i'm reading an actual hold-it-in-my-hands book).

is there anyone who thinks i may have been a little optimistic in my goal to learn español by week's end? eh, gotta have one failure.

Monday, March 12, 2001

i have decided to work on loosening the hold procrastination has on me. i put too much off. i now have 31 books queued for reading. at my current pace, i will finish the 383 pager i'm now working on sometime around Chriskwanzukkah time. i have dustbunnies living in my bathroom that are the size of house cats. my car has needed an oil change since August.

to make myself a more productive person, i am setting some goals for myself for this week:
  • finish my current read by Thursday evening (which means by Wednesday evening because i have plans Thursday after work).
  • oil change on car (half credit for having a mechanic do it)(yes, i can do my own oil changes).
  • propose a budget for myself.
  • promptly ignore budget by buying new shoes this week, a CD or two, and maybe some new clothes.
  • haircut. haircut. need haircut.
  • say 'so long!' to goatee growth and return to clean-shavenality. tonight.
  • clean up all the little hairs that fall from the pre-shave trim of my goatee. tonight. (if i don't put it on the list, i won't do it).
  • clean bathroom. reveal to world that antique finish fixtures in bathroom are actually supposed to be shiny chrome.
  • learn Spanish (other than what i hear on Taco Bell commercials, or come ons).

i think that should work for now. i don't want to overextend myself and give up totally in frustration. we'll see how long it take me to return to my procrastinating, underachieving ways.
i love advertisements.
